7 Things to Do in Cabo San Lucas….and 1 You Should Never Do

“Cabo” or “Los Cabos” refers to both cities – Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo, plus the stretch of resorts in between. This beautiful area is located at the end of the Baja peninsula and is now the fastest growing resort destination in all of Mexico. The main difference between the two cities is that Cabo San Lucas draws most of the tourists and spring breakers, while San Jose del Cabo gives one a quieter and more authentic experience.

Once just a placid fishing village at the very tip of Baja California, Cabo San Lucas has blossomed into one of the world’s most famous spots for celeb sightings, grand scenery, sunning, snorkeling that’s unparalleled, and “all things water”. If you don’t love beautiful blue water, picturesque beaches and any type of water activities you can imagine, don’t go there. The beauty of this area is mesmerizing.

This destination is also quite a party town. Restaurants offer steals on excellent seafood or Mexican fare – many allowing you to bring in your own catch of the day so they can grill it for you. And for those with a set of wheels, it’s easy to escape the tourist zone and surf in secluded beaches, shop in quaint art towns, visit nature’s most pristine deserts, jagged mountains, or dive in coral reefs in the Sea of Cortez.

1. El Arco de Cabo San Lucas

Nestled along the Gulf of California, the iconic El Arco (Land’s End) is one of Cabo San Lucas’ most picturesque attractions. This natural limestone arch straddles the bay – where the Gulf of California meets the Pacific Ocean. This area is one of the most biologically diverse waters in the world and one of the best ways to experience diversity and beauty is to just dive into it. The underwater species are extensive and the sea lions hanging out on the rocks are adorable.

El Arco is their most famous landmark in Cabo and Land’s End is just that – the end of the Baja peninsula. Every 4 years, the tide changes and the beach emerges so you can actually walk underneath the Arch. Either way…the arch is beautiful from the perspective of water or land.

2. Take a Glass Bottom Boat Ride to Land’s End, Lover’s Beach, and the Window to the Pacific

Taking a glass-bottom boat ride is a perfect way to see the major landmarks in Cabo. On top of getting a great tour of Cabo San Lucas, you get to see lots of fish through the glass without having to get wet. Settled near the Land’s End rock formations, Playa del Amor, or Lover’s Beach, is one of Cabo San Lucas’ famous beaches. Sunbathing is the perfect form of relaxation and pleasure here and its long stretch of shoreline facing the sunset makes it a romantic destination for couples.

3. Scuba Diving at Cabo Pulmo

Cabo Pulmo (closer to San Jose del Cabo)  is an amazing place to scuba dive. There are over 300 different species of fish, which has helped it earn its nickname “Aquarium of the World”.  If you would prefer to snorkel, it is a great way to get a glimpse into the world below and not have to struggle with an oxygen tank. There are tons of fish to see and the water is so clean that there is great visibility – up to 60 feet.

The Mexican National Marine Park is home to one of Baja’s most spectacular coral reefs and a host of unique sea life. Although it is a long day trip from Cabo, it is so worthwhile. Try snorkeling at Los Arbolitos beach or hike to Las Sirenitas’ weird and beautiful rock formations.

4. Walk Along the Marina.

With tons of shops, restaurants, and bars, there is something for everyone along the Marina. In abundance are vendors trying to sell their services for snorkeling, diving, glass bottom boat tours, kayaking, etc. Another favorite is to shop at the flea markets where you can buy souvenirs to your heart’s content or just walk and see all the colorful displays.

Oh…and the fresh fruit. If you’ve never had fruit with the “Cabo seasoning” on it…you haven’t lived. The unusual seasoning is a perfect blend of sweet, savory, and spicy! Very unusual and lots of fun.

5. Wild Canyon

Located in the third fork of El Tule Canyon, Wild Canyon is home to Cabo San Lucas’ craziest and most nerve-wracking activities. If you’re a dare-devil, you are in for a real treat!

Off-the-road ATV adventures, night zip line, and gondola bungee jumping are only a few offerings for the brave of heart. if you are seeking fully-loaded, heart-pounding action, you can find some death-defying activities at Wild Canyon.

Have you ever imagined that you could cross a suspended bridge on board an ATV?  Well, Wild Canyon has it for you and much, much more. Just make sure you are ready for the challenge.

6. Flyboard at Santa Maria Bay

Flyboarding is a lot of fun for some folks and is rarely available in most vacation destinations so if you’re feeling brave, don’t miss out on this unique experience. Flyboarding was introduced at Medano Beach in Cabo San Lucas in April of 2013. If you crave the adrenaline rush of adventure sports,  step into the wakeboard boots and get ready to soar and dive in the clear Cabo waters. A personal watercraft provides a continuous water-powered jet to your specially equipped board, and experienced trainers control your power and height. You do the rest with simple movements of your feet, knees, and body weight. You’ll be flying through the air and hovering like a pro in no time.

7. Sunset cruises from Cabo San Lucas

The fun in Cabo San Lucas doesn’t end when the sun goes down.  Whether you’re looking for the wild craziness of a booze cruise or the romance of sunset sailing, you’ll find the Sunset Cruises to be romantic and stunningly beautiful. There is something special about being on the water when the sun sets, seeing the colors glistening off the windows of the buildings along the Cabo San Lucas skyline and making a beautiful silhouette over El Arco. Don’t miss taking at least one cruise because the magic that takes place when the sun goes down presents one of the most stunning sites you’ll ever experience.

DON’T DO THIS ONE! Take a Photo with a Lion Cub

This experience is a cruel tourist trap – taking a photo with a lion cub. Lots of people have an attraction to petting and holding baby animals. Let’s face it…they are so cute. BUT…if you participate in one of these horrible traps, you will be supporting cruelty. Many of these businesses tell you the money they collect from tourists goes towards lion conservation and that the cub just ate and became sleepy. What is truly taking place is that the cub had been sedated. And…at a certain age – when they grow up and are no longer so cute, they will be killed for their pelts. After all,  you can’t keep getting cubs unless you’re willing to take care of an unlimited number of adult lions. Please don’t become involved in this awful tourist trap.
